Anthropology Question

For your short essay you must respond to the following statement & question:

Human perception is culturally influenced.

How does visual anthropology allow us to better understand this proposition and explore cultural differences through imagery?

You must also include an annotated bibliography (not included in the word count) – of no less than 6 sources that compliment your research and that you cite in your short essay.

An annotated bibliography is a list of sources (books, articles, chapters) where each source is followed by a brief summary paragraph describing/evaluating the source. 

Below is an example of an annotated bibliography:

Davidson, Hilda Ellis. Roles of the Northern Goddess. London: Routledge, 1998.

Davidson’s book provides a thorough examination of the major roles filled by the numerous pagan goddesses of Northern Europe in everyday life, including their roles in hunting, agriculture, domestic arts like weaving, the household, and death. The author discusses relevant archaeological evidence, patterns of symbol and ritual, and previous research. The book includes a number of black and white photographs of relevant artifacts.

MARKING CRITERIA

Research and Literature

• Evidence of extensive research involving appropriate sources relevant to the topic of visual anthropology.
• Strong comprehension of the overarching elements of visual anthropology.
• Sophisticated application of research materials in developing the paper.
• The annotated bibliography includes a good range of relevant anthropological or other related discipline sources.

Discussion and Structure

• Ability to draw connections between visual anthropology, film and social/cultural life.
• Outstanding logical development of key discussion points.
• Identification of an appropriate range of topics and themes that are relative to the course and the course objectives.
• The essay is structured appropriate to include an introduction, aims, objectives and a conclusion.

Style and Presentation

• The essay is well written, easy to read, is clear in its intentions and rationale.
• All academic sources are acknowledged appropriately, both in text and in the annotated bibliography.
• The essay is free from spelling, grammatical, typing and/or punctuation errors.
