Asian Studies

Description

Using AADJ’s “Tell Your Story. Help Us Track Hate” website (Links to an external site.) or #StopAAPIHate’s 2021 report (Links to an external site.), students will choose one narrative to contextualize in terms of the content covered in this course.

Your project proposal should be between 2-5 sentences. You will include a link to or quote of the specific hate incident on which you will be writing, along with a brief overview of some of the issues you will be analyzing in relation to this incident.

For example:

Incident:

‘This incident happened at Chattahoochee River on Column Drive. I was riding my bicycle while a man ran by me. He screamed out loud “You needed to stay 6 feet away from me.” I stopped because I almost fell off my bicycle. I asked “What was wrong? You screamed at me”.” He screamed, “Asian, you needed to stay 6 feet away from me.” I tried to take my phone out, but he grabbed and held my hand to the point that I could not move. I was not able to take his picture. This is a second time he screamed at me on the street.’

For my final paper, I will be writing about an incident in which an Asian American woman was yelled at for being “too close” while riding her bike. I will be looking at this incident in relation to the quarantine of Chinatown during the 1900 San Francisco Plague Outbreak and the idea of yellow fever, as well as the hypersexualization/objectification of AAPI women.
