Week 5 Project: Corruption Supporting Lectures: Ethical Systems Crime Control Discretion and Law Enforcement Discretion and Corruption Managing an ethical police department can be a difficult challenge. As you have seen, the criminal justice field often presents situations that would appear to be governed by competing ethical systems. The very nature of police work presents officers with ethical challenges not found in other occupations. For this assignment, you have been contracted to assist an urban police department improve its ethical performance. Your task is to provide police leadership with background and guidance on the following topics. Prepare a report in Microsoft Word that addresses each of these points: Describe how organizations can become corrupt, using Trautman’s corruption continuum as a guide.  Explain the continuum of compromise as it relates to individual police misconduct, including how it might help supervisors recognize warning signs. Include the concept of means-end thinking in your review. Describe Bandura’s definition of self-regulation and describe how aspects of the law enforcement job can cause one to turn away from self-regulation. Last, considering that police agencies are nearly evenly-split on the topic of gratuities, determine whether you would recommend a policy that forbids patrol officers from accepting gratuities. Support your position with reasoning and research.

Watch the film, Warrieor vs. Guardian mindsets in Policing from the link below.  Answer the below question in a minimum of 200 words.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MgbfBnSPhqA   Garnering what you have taken fro the film, and taking into consideration how law enforcement has evolved during the previous 3 to 5 years, describe the ‘ideal’ profile for the modern police officer.  Include the environment that this ‘police officer’ will work in.  For those of you who are active law enforcement (or corrections) officers, I would suggest using the agency/county/municipality/entity that you work as the landscape for answering this question.

Watch the film, Warrieor vs. Guardian mindsets in Policing from the link below.  Respond to the classmate discussion post below in a minimum of 100 words. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MgbfBnSPhqA  After viewing the film, and based on my own experience, the modern police officer needs to have several qualities. Law enforcement has changed dramatically in the last several years. The warrior mentality is what was trained and what was expected. It was the us versus them mentality. It worked for the time, but as society evolves, so should law enforcement. I believe a modern police officer must possess both mindsets (guardian/warrior) depending on the situation. One must know when to transition and what type will have the most effective outcome for the given situation. For example, some contacts (citizens), only know the warrior mindset language in that they must be told what to do and told aggressively to gain compliance. In the jail system, this is commonplace. First off, in many instances, the officers are new and are still learning how to communicate with criminals, and some jail inmates only respond to direct commands. However, I believe the guardian mindset will garner more positive outcomes and possibly less physical force. Effective communication is essential in the guardian mindset. De-escalation tactics have become commonplace in today’s law enforcement. They decrease physical force, and injuries to suspects, and the officers, and the outcome is the same.
